Reflection

What have I learnt about the grammar that I didn’t know before?

It was very good time to learn grammar during ESL because grammar really helps me writing an essay. I’ve learnt 3 types of sentences and different types of noun. A sentence consists of subject, verb and object. The verb tells us what the subject does. For example: I ate a chicken burger. I is the subject, ate is the verb and a chicken burger is the object.

A simple sentence is also called independent clause like he kicks the ball.

Then, compound sentence is a sentence that has two independent sentences. For example, I drink a cup of coffee and Jack drinks a cup of tea. Remember, we have to use conjunction to make a compound sentence. Examples of conjunction are for, and, nor, but, or, yet, so, etc.

Lastly, it’s a complex sentence. A complex sentence consists of two sentences however it’s not similar with a compound sentence. In a complex sentence, if we take out the independent sentence, the sentence is not clear enough. Example, We are practicing now because tomorrow we have a big game tomorrow. To conclude, I’ve known three types of sentences in ESL.

How will this knowledge help me in my writing?
This knowledge is really useful and it helps me in my writing. After I’ve learnt different types of sentences, it’s useful because it helps people who read my sentence would be more understand and make sense of what I’m trying to say. I also know how to structure paragraphs in my essay.

Topic: Water Filtration

These are the questions to interview a science teacher (either Mr Justin or Ms Jane, I haven't decided yet):

  • How to test water purity?
  • How does it work?
  • What do you need?
  • Cost involved?
  • How long to get the perfect pure water?
  • Does a filter remove all bad purity's or do we need to do something extra?

Last week, I had a meeting again with my supervisor Mr Mano. He told me to clarify again the topic question and he also told me to interview someone who's expert at my topic. I think Mr justin or Ms Jane will be good to be interviewed. And for the following days, I've researched all the low cost materials around my house and unfortunately I haven't found a rough design for my final product. Now I'm trying to make questions to interview either Ms Jane or Mr Justin. Lastly, I'm going to meet my supervisor again this this week...

The state of drinking water supplies can be quantified by four important characteristics: quality, quantity, reliability, and cost.

English in the Third Millennium

Two thousand years ago English did not exist. A thousand years ago it was a language used by less than two million people. Now it is the most influential language in the world, spoken by more than a billion people on the planet, as their first, second or third language. English currently dominates science, business, the mass media and popular culture. For example, 80% of emails on the Internet are in English. But where will English be at the end of the third millennium???

One view is that English is going to become even more important as a global lingua franca, domination the world's trade and media while most other languages will become localized or just die out. At present, over half the world's 6500 languages are in danger of extinction. Another view is that English is already breaking up as Latin did, into separate languages.

Hopefully, neither of these things will happen. Although different varieties of English will continue to develop around the world, standard English will survive for international communication.

For me personally, I think that English will probably stay in control for a long time, at least while the USA remains the top superpower, but it definitely won't become the only language in the world

Let's improve our english skill!!!

Will post something soon again ^^

Rubik's Cube

There is only one solution and millions of ways of going wrong when it comes to solving 'The Cube'. One eighth of the world's population has laid hands on it, and more than 300 million of the most popular puzzles in history have been sold worldwide.
When hungarian Erno Rubik frist made his colorful cube in 1974, and showed it to some of his friends, the effect was instantaneous. Once they started fiddling excitedly with The Cube, they were hooked as they tried to get it back to its original position. The compulsive interest of friends and students in The Cube caught its creator by surprise, and it was months before any thought was given to the possibility of mass production.
However, a few years later, it seemed that the whole world was suddenly working away at their Cubes. People would play with them at home and at work, on buses, on tubes and in trains., in restaurants and cafes. Everywhere you looked, someone had a cube. As soon as you started playing with it, you couldn't put it down - the Cube was just to addictive....

Try it!!! You'll be addicted too ^o^

Exponential Function

Here's the clip about the project...
Hope you guys enjoy it

Exams are a fair way of testing students. Do you agree???

  1. Every year thousands of students take important essays which can decide their future. For example, students have to pass exams with satisfactory grades in order to get a place in a university. However, are exams a fair way of judging a student's ability?
  2. On the one hand, exams seem fair. The questions are the same for all students. Also, the exams are marked according to a strict scheme and usually by more than one examiner. Furthermore, students do the exams at the same time and under the same conditions.
  3. On the other hand, there are some drawbacks with exams. Despite some students deserving to pass, they might be so nervous on the big day that they make a mess of the exam. Moreover, there may be other reasons, such as illness which affect a student's performance in an exam. An alternative to exams would be a system of continuous assessment of course work by teachers during the year although this would be mean more regular testing and more work for teachers. There would be a greater oppurtunity for students to copy work, too.
  4. To sum up, exams are not the ideal way of testing students and the idea of assessing students' work over a longer period is becoming more popular. In my opinion, the best system would be a mixture of the two-50% exams and 50% course work.

Last week, I had a meeting with my supervisor for my personal project. It's a short meeting with him, but we had many discussions about my topic which's water filtration experiment. He made me confused because of his questions. He said, "Who is this product for?" I was confused and while I was thinking for the answer, he showed me one of the nominations for CNN Heroes last year. His name is Evan Wadongo and he is african. What did he do? He made a simple and cheap lamp so his product will light up their homes. At night, in his area, rural area, it doesn't have light therefore many students don't do their homework. For further information about him, click this link. For the following days, I've researched many interesting sources about the product like the process of water filtration, how does it work, etc. Last, I'm going to meet my supervisor again to have another discussion this week.

Personal Project

Water is essential for life. People, animals and plants all need water to live and grow. But in many places people don't have enough water to stay healthy. Many people have to travel long distances to collect water. And often, the water is available isn't safe to drink. Therefore for my personal project, I'm going to make a water filtration.

The goal is to see if it is possible to filter dirty water, to make clean water, using filters created from objects around the house.

AoI: Environment
Key Question: how can we change water through filtration?
